Every year it's the same. The first properly hot week arrives, every installer on the Fraser Coast fills up, and the people who left it late wait it out. Book now and you pick the install date.
Tell us about the room and we'll come back with the right size, a fixed price and an install date. Same business day, no obligation.
Air conditioning is the most seasonal trade there is. Getting in early isn't a sales line. It changes what you pay, what you get and when you get it.
Through the cooler months there's room in the calendar. Once the first heatwave lands, the day fills with breakdown callouts and new installs get pushed back behind them.
The quiet, high-efficiency models in the popular sizes are the first to run short at the peak of the season. Order early and we fit what suits your place, not whatever is left in the warehouse.
A roof cavity in a Hervey Bay January is a genuinely hard place to work. A cooler-month install is a cleaner install, and you're not sitting in the heat waiting for a slot.
A starting point only. The real number comes from a heat-load calculation on site.
| Room | Floor area | Typical capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom or study | up to 20 m² | 2.5 kW |
| Large bedroom, small living | 20–35 m² | 3.5 kW |
| Living or dining room | 35–50 m² | 5.0 kW |
| Open-plan living | 50–65 m² | 7.1 kW |
| Large open-plan | 65–85 m² | 8.0–9.4 kW |
| Whole home | ducted, zoned | Sized on the plan |
Floor area is only one input. Ceiling height, insulation, the amount and direction of glass, how exposed the room is and Hervey Bay's humidity all move the number, often up a size. We measure and calculate it properly before we quote, and the quote is a fixed price.
We'll tell you straight. If a service or a repair gets you another few summers, that's what we'll recommend, and we'll put the reasoning in writing either way.
Book My Free AssessmentThe honest answer usually shows itself in five minutes on site. Here's what we look for.
A system that works beautifully in a dry inland town can underperform badly here. Four things we account for locally.
Same team, same town, based at Pialba. We're the ones who come back if something isn't right, and we're easy to find.
Licensed electrical work and licensed refrigerant handling, fully insured, and everything installed to the manufacturer's spec so your warranty actually stands up.
You get a local crew you can put a face to, with the O'Brien workmanship guarantee and a national brand standing behind the job.
Residential and commercial, across Hervey Bay and the wider Fraser Coast.
Single-room cooling and heating, from bedrooms to big open-plan living.
Several indoor heads on one outdoor unit. Ideal where wall or yard space is tight.
Whole-home comfort with zoning, so you're not paying to cool rooms nobody's in.
Diagnostics, breakdowns, filter and coil cleans, and preventative servicing before summer.
Not stock photos. Actual installs, shot by the blokes who did them.
The polite agent was arrived as soon as possible for us to solve our a/c problem. I was flattered to see him voluntarily remove his boots before coming into the house. It means a lot and he certainly did solve our problem.
Could not have had a better experience, from quoting to installation. Very friendly helpful people to deal with. Keep up the good work, thank you all very much.
The team at O’brien Electrical has been excellent from beginning to end Nothing has been to much trouble, appointment have been kept and upgrade and repairs all executed in a timely manner
Very good service, only 3 days waiting time from booking and carrying out the job at a very competitive price. The staff was right on time, was very professional in cleaning six split system aircons, and left the inside and outside of the house in clean conditions. I would recommend this company for split system supply and install very much.
Very happy with having 3 air cons serviced by delightful gentleman who left the house spotless after his job. Prompt on arrival time, & considerate with his work. Thoroughly recommend O’Brien Electrical Hervey Bay.
Turned up on time, completed the work to a good standard, highly recommend O’Briens for all their great work
Prompt friendly service. After a bad experience with another local a/c company, we contacted O'Brien Electrical Hervey Bay for a repair job. The service tech turned up as scheduled and had the problem solved within 20 minutes (previous company hadn't fixed it in more than six months). Both the tech and admin staff were friendly and very helpful. Would definitely recommend.
O'Brien Electrical Hervey Bay is a fantastic business with great systems in place and customer service that is second to none! Knowledgeable and competent technicians and friendly and accommodating office staff make this business a pleasure to deal with. Highly recommended! We would not use anyone else!
Excellent service , prompt and very professional at all times.
Best service I have ever received. Professional, polite staff. They keep you informed and turn up when they say they will. Highly recommend.
Excellent service
Hervey Bay and right across the Fraser Coast.

A straightforward back-to-back split system is usually a same-day job. Most take three to five hours from arrival to handover. Multi-head systems and ducted installs take longer, generally one to three days depending on the run of the pipework and the roof access. We'll tell you which it is when we quote, not on the day.
The table above is a reasonable starting point, but floor area on its own gets it wrong often enough that we don't rely on it. Ceiling height, insulation, how much glass you have and which way it faces, how many people are usually in the room and Hervey Bay's humidity all change the answer.
Undersize it and it runs flat out and never quite gets there. Oversize it and it short-cycles, which cools the air without pulling the moisture out. That's the cold, clammy feeling. We do a proper heat-load calculation on site so you get the right one.
It depends on age, what's failed and what a fix costs against a new system. As a rough rule: if it's under about eight years old and the fault is a single component, repairing is usually the better call. Past ten years, needing gas every season, or looking at a compressor replacement, and you're generally better off putting the money into a new unit that costs less to run.
We'll give you both numbers and a straight recommendation. If a repair is the smarter option we'll say so.
It's a genuine consideration close to the water. Salt accelerates corrosion on the outdoor coil and casing, which shortens the life of the unit if it's ignored.
Two things help a lot: choosing a model with a corrosion-resistant coil treatment where the location warrants it, and siting the outdoor unit somewhere sheltered from the prevailing salt-laden wind. A periodic fresh-water rinse of the coil is worth doing too. We'll talk through what makes sense for your address when we're on site.
Yes. Air conditioning work sits across two licences: electrical work and refrigerant handling. Both are legal requirements, not optional extras. Our team holds them, we carry full insurance, and every install is done to the manufacturer's specification so the equipment warranty stays valid.
Both. We service and repair systems we didn't install as well as ones we did: diagnostics, gas leaks, faulty boards, drainage issues, filter and coil cleans, and preventative servicing.
A pre-summer service is the cheapest insurance there is. Most of the breakdowns we attend in January were visible in September.
Yes, and in this climate it's one of the better matches there is. Your cooling load peaks in the middle of the day, which is exactly when your panels are producing most. Running the house cool through the afternoon on your own generation costs far less than doing it on grid power at night.
We install solar and batteries as well as air conditioning, so we can look at both in the same visit rather than sending you to two different trades.
It varies more than most people expect. Capacity, brand, how far the indoor and outdoor units are apart, whether there's an existing unit to remove and dispose of, and how hard the access is all move the price.
Which is why we quote on site rather than over the phone, and why the quote is a fixed price in writing. No allowances that grow on install day.
Yes. Shops, offices, clubs and light industrial, alongside the electrical side: switchboards, lighting, data, testing and tagging. If you need one contractor covering the air conditioning and the electrical, that's the easiest way to run it.
All of Hervey Bay: Pialba, Point Vernon, Scarness, Torquay, Urangan, Urraween, Kawungan, Eli Waters, Dundowran, Wondunna, Nikenbah and Craignish. Plus Toogoom, Burrum Heads, River Heads, Booral, Susan River, Takura and down to Maryborough. If you're somewhere on the Fraser Coast that isn't listed, call us and we'll let you know.
